A western pattern that’s quickly made its way across the world, Randall Kaufman’s Stimulator is a bushy dry fly that’s tough to beat. Randall originally tied the Stimulator in the early 1980s as an adult stonefly, but it was quickly found to be a versatile fly that could be fished as an attractor, a top fly in the ol’ hopper dropper system, a grasshopper, a caddis, and the large stoneflies of the west--you get it, the possibilities are almost endless.

Tied in an extensive range of colors, the Stimulator is a fly that’s easily adaptable to the situation at hand, whether it’s a cloud of October Caddis, a windy day matching hoppers in the backcountry, or tossing the famous“Royal” color scheme to hungry brookies. Although the Stimulator has its roots in fast white riffles, it’s a fly that can work equally well in tight streams and still lakes and one that you should carry all year long--who knows when you might want to spice things up with an indicator that a trout can eat in the dead of winter.
