Description

Designed to take on the most demanding saltwater species in the world, Abel’s SDS Fly Reel represents the pinnacle of sealed drag performance in a large-format platform. Winner of “Best New Saltwater Reel” at the 2016 ICAST/IFTD show, Abel’s SDS combines immense stopping power with exceptional smoothness and reliability. Designed to handle everything from technical flats fishing to all-out battles with powerful gamefish, the SDS delivers a wide drag range capable of protecting light tippets while still having the authority to stop fish like hard-running tarpon in their tracks. Manufactured in Montrose, Colorado in sizes that accommodate rod weights 7 through 12,  the SDS is Abel’s solution for serious saltwater anglers and everything they pursue, from double-digit bonefish to a pod of blackfin tuna feeding off the back of a shrimp trawler.

Design
Large Arbor Sealed Drag Saltwater Platform –
Abel’s SDS is engineered as a large arbor reel built specifically for tough saltwater applications. Available in both ported and solid frame configurations, the design allows anglers to balance weight, ventilation, and aesthetics exactly how they like. A threaded spool release cap enables quick and secure spool changes, while the user-convertible retrieve system allows for easy left- or right-hand configuration.

Finish
Signature Abel Precision Finish –
The SDS features Abel’s renowned machining and finishing quality, delivering a clean, refined look backed by exceptional durability. Built to withstand saltwater exposure and prevent corrosion, the finish maintains its integrity under all conditions while reflecting the premium craftsmanship Abel is known for. With our ability to fully customize the look/color of your SDS, getting the exact color finish that you’re looking for has never been easier.

Materials
6061-T651 Aerospace Grade Aluminum Construction –
The SDS is constructed from cold-finished 6061-T651 aerospace-grade aluminum across the frame, spool, drag knob, and reel foot. This material provides outstanding strength, corrosion resistance, and rigidity, ensuring the reel can handle the stresses of powerful saltwater fish without compromise, while a lightweight feel keeps you casting on the flat all day without fatigue.

Drag
Sealed Carbon Fiber and Stainless Steel Multi-Disc Drag System –
The SDS sports a fully sealed drag system composed of alternating stacked carbon fluoropolymer composite and stainless steel discs. This configuration delivers an incredibly wide range of drag pressure with smooth, consistent performance and minimal startup inertia. The sealed design protects the drag from salt, sand, and debris, ensuring reliable function in extreme environments. Whether applying light pressure to protect delicate tippet or maximum force to stop a powerful run, the SDS brings dependable control.

Arbor Size
Large Arbor –
The large arbor spool increases line retrieval speed, reduces line memory, and provides substantial backing capacity for long-running saltwater species. This design enhances efficiency during fast-paced fights and improves overall balance on heavier saltwater rod setups.

Warranty
Abel Lifetime Warranty –
Abel’s SDS Reels are backed by a lifetime warranty covering the repair or replacement of parts due to defects in materials or workmanship. The warranty applies only to the original owner and is valid exclusively for products purchased through an authorized Abel dealer. Abel will determine whether an issue qualifies for warranty coverage based on material or manufacturing defects. For older or discontinued models, replacement parts may be substituted with current-production components, and cosmetic finishes may vary from the original. Products purchased through auction sites or unauthorized marketplaces are not eligible for warranty coverage. Repairs that fall outside of warranty coverage can still be serviced by Abel, with a repair quote provided for approval before any work is completed.

Elegant but QC issues?

"This is a very fine reel. Elegant, light, with great stopping power. Caught a huge 'cuda last week in Cuba and combined with a T&T Sextant 9-wt I felt like I was in control every second. Smooth retrieve and finely calibrated drag pressure control was beyond perfect. Now, the down side. I ordered this reel with a custom finish, and I was told it would take as long as six months. Not a big deal. But then after my first trip to Cuba in June, where I washed the reel every day with fresh water, the screw hub that holds the spool to the reel started to rust. They said this was a known issue and they had a replacement. But beyond that, the hex set screw that holds the drag housing cover was completely corroded, and there were signs of corrosion on the inside of the spool. I sent the reel back, and they refurbished it and it seemed fine. But just to be sure, I heavily greased the drag cover hex set screw, the threads of the hub screw, and the part of the spool that mates with the drag. Happy to report no signs of any issues after the latest salt water trip."
