Gold anodized Sage Click fly reel, machined aluminum large-arbor skeletonized spool with click drag, sleek fly reel design

The Sage Click fly reel series has been around for quite some time, and since its introduction not much has changed. The current iteration of this click-and-pawl reel features a classic clicker feel with modern technical attributes which we have come to expect from Sage. Today, we’ll examine the Sage Click, a fun reel that combines old-school technology with some high-performance features.

Weight

The 5wt size Sage Click boasts an extremely light weight of 2.95 ounces. For comparison, the Galvan Brookie weighs in at 3.2 ounces, and the Ross Colorado is 3.5 ounces. Needless to say, the Sage Click would pair well with any ultralight rod for an excellent creek outfit.

Drag

This is a click-and-pawl reel, so there isn’t a drag per se. However, it does feature a small adjustment knob that can slightly tighten or loosen the clicker tension.

Sound

The Sage Click produces a satisfying sound on both the incoming and the outgoing retrieve. The two sounds are differentiated and both sound great.

Spool & Retrieval Rate

The Click sports a 3.5” maximum diameter, a 1” width, and a 2.7” arbor, which picks up a whopping 9” of line per revolution. This isn’t just great for a click-and-pawl reel, it rivals the line retrieval of most high-performance 5wt reels on the market.

Looks & Ergonomics

Aesthetically, the Sage Click is a handsome reel. Its sleek, ultra-ported design comes in three colors: Bronze, Stealth, and Champagne. The pawl tension adjustment knob is quite small, but functional considering how infrequently anglers will use it. The Handle is a bit stubby, but it also serves its purpose.

Warranty

As of 2024, every new Sage series reel purchased from an authorized dealer comes with an original-owner warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship. Repair fees can vary depending on the model and age of the product.

Price: $330

Conclusion

Overall, the Sage Click is a fantastic click-and-pawl reel. Sage did a great job of taking an old-school concept and implementing modern innovations to make a high-performance clicker. With a large arbor, its lightweight design, and a classic-sounding click, the click covers all the bases. The only major downside is the reel’s price, which is rather hefty for an overseas-built click reel. While the Sage Click may not fit every budget, we feel it will have a place in the quiver for Sage aficionados, creek junkies, and click-and-pawl connoisseurs alike.
