Underneath, it is the same reel that built the brand's reputation on tarpon flats: a fully sealed carbon fiber drag, a taper lock quick-change spool, a three ball bearing spindle assembly and machining held to the aerospace tolerances Jack Charlton brought to the company. What the Tournament adds are two refinements that matter when a fish is already running. The drag knob stands proud of the frame instead of sitting flush in the porting, so you can find it and turn it with a wet or gloved hand rather than digging fingers into the ports. Color coded snap-in indicators let you mark a working drag setting and return to it. This is a reel for tarpon specialists, tournament anglers and IGFA line-class fishing, where a drag that hesitates once costs the whole day.
Design
Open Cage Ported Frame - The Tournament runs an open cage frame with aggressive porting throughout, which is how a reel this overbuilt keeps its weight from getting worse. In the 9550, the spool measures 4 inches across with a 1.2 inch width over a 2.65 inch arbor, and the frame diameter runs 4.5 inches. The look is industrial and purpose-built rather than jewelry, and the handle is large enough to grip properly under load.
Calibrated One-Turn-Stop Drag Knob - The entire drag range lives inside a single rotation of an oversized indexed knob, so you can go from free spool to full setting without hunting through turns while a fish burns backing. On the Tournament the knob is raised and easier to grab than the standard Mako version, and it carries snap-in color coded indicator inserts in three colors so a preferred setting can be marked and found again. Worth knowing before you buy: the inserts mark the knob, not the frame, so returning to an exact pressure still leans on your own reference points.
Taper Lock Quick-Change Spool - Spools change on a taper lock system with a simple, secure release knob, and the spool rides on a three ball bearing spindle assembly. Both are shared with the 9500 through 9700 saltwater reels, and both are built around the same idea: no small threaded parts to drop over the gunwale, and no play developing between spool and frame after a season of hard fish.
Finish
Type III Hard Anodizing - Mako finishes the Tournament in Type III hard anodizing, which drives a near ceramic hardness into the surface of the aluminum rather than laying a coating over it. That is the finish specification that matters on a reel expected to live in salt spray, get dragged across a skiff deck and go months between deep cleanings. The Tournament ships in matte black.
Materials
Fully Machined Aluminum - Frame and spool are machined aluminum, produced to the highest machining standards and level of polish, then hand assembled and individually calibrated before shipping. Mako builds these reels to order and quotes 3 to 6 weeks for delivery, which is the trade-off for a reel that arrives calibrated to spec rather than pulled off a shelf.
Drag
Type - A fully sealed multidisc full-contact carbon fiber drag using Mako's button technology, which is aimed squarely at start-up friction. The spool turns the instant a fish pulls rather than jolting against a stack that has set, and that is what protects a class tippet on the first surge. In the 9550, maximum drag falls between 15 and 17 pounds, which is enough pressure for tarpon, giant trevally and offshore work. The drag pressure you set holds through a long run instead of fading, and the clicker gives a clean mechanical note in both directions at a medium pitch, sharp enough to hear without carrying across the flat.
Materials - Carbon fiber discs run inside a housing sealed by o-rings and proprietary carbon impregnated Teflon lip seals. Sealing is the entire point on a reel in this category: salt, sand and grit never reach the stack, so the drag you calibrated in year one behaves the same in year ten without being opened up. Carbon fiber is the right disc material here because it sheds the heat a big fish generates without losing consistency as it warms.
Arbor Size
Large Arbor - The Tournament is a large arbor reel, with the 9550 running a 2.65 inch arbor inside a 4 inch spool for 9.62 inches of line pickup per turn. That is not the fastest retrieve rate on the market, but it is more than adequate for saltwater work, and the large arbor keeps backing lying flat instead of stacking under load. Backing capacity on the 9550 runs to roughly 350 yards of 40 pound PowerPro, with Mako quoting 300 to 355 yards of 50 to 60 pound braid alongside a WF9 line. Capacity scales up through the range: the 9500 takes 230 to 300 yards of 50 pound braid with a WF7, the 9600 takes 330 to 440 yards of 60 to 80 pound braid with a WF10, and the 9700 takes 410 yards and up of 100 pound braid with a WF12.
Warranty
Mako Lifetime Warranty - As of August 2026, Mako warrants its reels to be free of manufacturing defects and covers repair or replacement of manufacturer defects for the lifetime of the original owner. The warranty does not cover direct, indirect, consequential, incidental or any other damage resulting from use of the reel, and any modification that alters the reel's calibrated settings can void coverage, so drag work goes back to Mako rather than to an outside bench. Register the reel with Mako after purchase and route service requests to them directly.
